Why I Fell in Love with Rice Milk Skincare: My Japanese History Inspiration
My journey began with a deep fascination for traditional Japanese beauty rituals. For centuries, women in the imperial court and legendary geishas collected the starchy water from rinsing rice and used it daily on their face and hair. They used it to maintain luminous, youthful-looking skin that could withstand even heavy white makeup.
Geishas especially relied on rice water (and its richer version, rice milk) to brighten the appearance of skin, refine the look of pores, and maintain that silky-smooth texture. This practice dates back to the Heian period and remains a well-known part of Japanese beauty traditions, continuing to inspire even modern K-beauty routines today.
I wanted to bring that same ancient magic into my daily life. So I started by making my own rice milk — and the transformation I experienced in my skin is what ultimately inspired me to turn it into soap.
How I Made My Rice Milk (Simple & Skincare-Focused Method)
Here’s exactly what I did:
I used ½ cup of jasmine rice (soaked for extra creaminess). I covered it with hot (not boiling) water and let it soak for about 3 hours until the grains softened. Then I drained it, added the soaked rice to a blender with 2–3 cups of fresh water, and blended until it turned beautifully milky and creamy.
I strained the mixture through a fine cloth to remove the solids, leaving behind smooth rice milk.
While it was still warm, I added a few drops of rose water for a soft floral scent, plus a few drops of fresh lemon juice for a gentle brightening touch.
The result was a light, nourishing rice milk that smelled subtly sweet and floral — perfect for skincare.
5 Fascinating Facts About Rice Milk and Why It’s a Skincare Favorite
Rice milk is far more than a drink — it contains naturally occurring elements valued in traditional skincare:
• Helps improve the appearance of uneven skin tone
• Supports hydration and skin comfort
• Leaves skin feeling smoother and softer
• Contains antioxidants that support skin vitality
• Known for its gentle, calming nature
The Amazing Results That Made Me Decide to Make Soap
After using the rice milk on my face and body for just a few days, the difference was clear. My skin felt incredibly soft and hydrated, with a natural brightness I hadn’t seen in a long time. Dry patches improved, my complexion looked more even, and my skin had that healthy, fresh glow I associate with Japanese-inspired care.
I loved the feeling so much that I didn’t want to stop at just applying the milk. That’s when I decided to turn it into a bar of soap — so I could enjoy the experience every single day in a convenient, long-lasting form.
The rice milk became the liquid base, infusing the entire bar. The finished soap is creamy, gentle, and leaves my skin feeling clean, soft, and comfortable.
It felt like the perfect way to take inspiration from traditional methods while creating something practical and luxurious for everyday use.
How My Rice Milk Soap Feels on the Skin
Every time I use it, my skin feels softer, smoother, and refreshed — no tightness, no dryness, just that clean and comfortable feeling.
It has quickly become my go-to daily bar for face and body.
